Background of JIM
The JIM ( Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing) and the JEC (Japanese Endowed Courses) Schemes are part of joint-governmental initiatives of the Government of Japan and India for skilling the manufacturing-related human resources in India. An MOC (Memorandum of Collaboration) was signed between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) of the Government of India and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, （METI） of the Government of Japan in November 2016 with a goal to “Train 30,000 floor shop leaders and engineers to Japanese standards in the next 10 years.” The Reasons leading up to the creation of the ” Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM)” and the “Japanese Endowed Courses (JEC)”Schemes include the need for better Job-related Technical skills and understanding of Japanese-manufacturing practices such as 5S, Kaizen, etc. and bettering of soft-skills (discipline, work-culture) amongst the human resources that are currently studying to join the manufacturing sector.
Problem facing Japanese Companies
Many Japanese companies in India are not able to recruit sufficiently high quality floor shop leaders and engineers, which is causes significant challenges to their business development.
JIM Project
- The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, （METI）, Japan and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, India signed an MOC in November 2016 to facilitate the projects as follows:
- Train 30,000 floor shop leaders and engineers to Japanese standards in the next 10 years.

Target of JIM
Target of the JIM Scheme
The target of the JIM Scheme (Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing Scheme) is to provide skilling opportunities for future shop floor leaders. For achieving this aim, the scheme targets the human resources group of ITI & Vocational Schools and college or university graduates. The JIM Scheme is JIM Accredited Japanese companies that have been accredited by the Government of Japan. The JIM Accredited Japanese companies provide training to JIM trainees. The JIM Accredited Japanese companies provide training on Japanese manufacturing concepts and practices such as Kaizen, 5S, etc. and on Japanese manufacturing philosophy with the aim to train shop floor leaders and engineers to the Japanese standard skill level.
